Herbert Calvin Mahan

Herbert C. Mahan, 85, of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones.

Herb was born on April 26, 1938, in Alcoa, Tennessee. He is survived by his loving wife, Julia Clay Pearson; his son, W. David Mahan and his wife, Melissa Schiby of Orlando, FL; his daughter, Mollie M. Bertrand, her husband Robert Bertrand and their children Emily and Ryan of Suffolk, VA; his step-son, Timothy C. Pearson, his wife, Ashton L. Pearson and their daughter, Myers Pearson of Columbia, SC; his step-daughter, Jennifer J. Pearson of Mount Pleasant; and his step-daughter Katherine P. Ruiz, her husband Brian A. Ruiz and their sons John and Luke Ruiz of Mount Pleasant; his brother James Mahan and sister-in-law Shelby of Butler, TN; and his beloved dog, Moose.

He was predeceased by his parents, Boyce and Elizabeth Mahan, and his brother Charles Mahan.

Herb graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics. His extensive career took many paths, including working for Raytheon, IBM, as a capital fundraiser for churches and as an entrepreneur. A life-long learner, he was a scholar of Religious, Greek, and Roman history; since moving to Charleston, he was focused on pursuing racial justice. Herb was an avid woodworker, enjoyed tennis and golf, being on the water, and his gardening creativity knew no bounds.

The consummate gentleman, Herb’s Tennessee wit and charm will be missed by all his family and his many friends.

The relatives and friends of Herb are invited to attend his memorial service at 10:30 am Saturday July 22, 2023, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 67 Anson Street, Charleston, SC.
