Herbert Ervin "Buddy" O'Neal

Herbert Ervin (Buddy) O’Neal, 82, of James Island, passed away on March 16 at a local hospital. He was born to Herbert Saunders O’Neal and Myrl Kizer O’Neal in St. George and grew up in Charleston. He was a retired rural mail carrier.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gwendolyn McDonald O’Neal; his children, Richard Scot O’Neal, Robert Keith O’Neal, Kathryn Gale O’Neal, all of James Island, Linda Renee Landon, of Johns Island, and Deidre Lynn Craven (Emmett Roger), of Winnsboro, SC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Carol Coleman (Al) of Fairfax, VA, Peggy Williams (Willie) of Summerville, SC, Frances Dee Baker of Charleston, Anne Maree Seel (Frank) of Jedburg, SC, and Barbara Kay O’Dowd (John) of Cuttingsville, VT.
Buddy was predeceased by a son, Steven Ervin O’Neal; two brothers, John Patrick and Charles Marcus O’Neal; a sister, Virginia (Ginny) Lindsay, as well as his parents.
An informal gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 2:00 – 4:00 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island. Burial will be private.
