Helen Walker “Betty†O’Connor, 89 of James Island, died July 25, 2015. Born in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late James and Katherine Walker and widow to the late Robert O’Connor. Betty grew up in Charleston and she moved to Maryland after her husband’s job relocated the family. While in Maryland she enjoyed being the First Lady of Cheverly from 1974 until 1985 and was the president of the Cheverly Women’s Club. After the death of her husband, she moved back to Charleston. Betty was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel, where she was a member of the Lady’s Guild. She also enjoyed going to the James Island Senior Center, cooking and reading the newspaper every day. Betty will be remembered for her love to her family and her sense of humor. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret O’Connor and husband Johnny Branks of James Island; grandchildren, Jennifer Stufflebeam and husband Jason of Atlanta, Robert Baxter of James Island, Thomas Baxter and wife Jennifer of James Island, John Branks, III and Austin Branks; three brothers, Henry Walker, James Walker and Russell Walker and wife Pat. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Folly Beach. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 27, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, JAMES ISLAND CHAPEL.
