Harold William Johnson Jr.

Harold William Johnson Jr., 69, of Mt. Pleasant, SC entered into eternal rest in his home with his family by his side on Thursday, August 4, 2016. He was born on February 12, 1947 in Youngstown, OH to the late Mrs. Veronica Johnson and the late Mr. Harold William Johnson Sr. He was a longtime resident of Mt. Pleasant and graduate of Bishop England High School and Clemson University. He traveled the world as a loadmaster with the United States Air Force Reserves for six years. Harold married his childhood sweetheart, Joan Russell, to whom he was a devoted husband for 47 years. He was employed as a nuclear engineer with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and Norfolk Naval Shipyard for nearly 30 years. Harold was known as “the man who could fix anything” among friends and coworkers. In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, reading crime novels, constructing model trains, traveling the country with family, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a faithful member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Johnson, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two daughters, Tara Hughes (Jeffrey Ray), of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Kelly Gardner (Marty), of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son, Craig Johnson (Lauren), of Mt. Pleasant, SC; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Barbour (Rick) and Betty Ann Wood (Tom); a large extended family and many loving friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, with inurnment to follow in the St. Benedict Columbarium Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Ste. 304, Chicago, IL 60611, or Piedmont Hospice, 501-A Deanna Ln., Wando, SC 29492.
