Grover Curtis Ramsey Jr., 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Born on March 26, 1942, in Asheville, NC, he was the only son of the late Helen Summey Ramsey and Grover C. Ramsey Sr.
Grover was a proud man and a hard worker. He was in the Army Reserves for six years. He was a lifetime member of James Island Yacht Club, a founding member of Charleston Inshore Anglers, and the lead in keeping the Myrtle Beach High School Class of 1960 connected through many outings and reunions. He earned numerous awards and accolades through the years while working at Sears, Nextel, and Motorola.
He was a Myrtle Beach boy through and through. He was the quarterback of the 1960 Myrtle Beach High School State Football Team and was named the Most Valuable Player of that team. Grover was a lifeguard for many years and an avid shagger, and he loved beach music. As someone who had a great appreciation for the outdoors, when he moved to Charleston, he began fishing and hunting, trolling the creeks and rivers, and enjoying all the beauty it encompassed. He took great pleasure in spending time on the water boating and pulling kids skiing. He also enjoyed golfing and later riding the course with friends in the golf cart as they played. Dearest to his heart was spending time with his granddaughters.
Grover never met a stranger. His smile always greeted you as if you were his favorite person. He had a gift of working with his hands and loved to build and create things, especially if they were for his granddaughters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Beverly B. Ramsey; daughter Nicole Ramsey Churchill, her husband Jamie, who Grover loved like a son; two beautiful granddaughters, Kaleigh and Addie, who stole his heart at birth; two wonderful adult grandchildren, Patrick and Caroline; brother-in-law Joseph Blackwell (Susan); sisters Millie Taylor (Ronnie), Sarah Taylor (Steve), and Helen Leclair (Danny); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
