Gladys Ann Dimond Stelmat

Gladys Ann Dimond Stelmat, 92, of Summerville, SC, beloved wife of Richard “Dick” Stelmat, died Saturday, August 17, 2024.

Born in 1932 in Newark, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Jean Brimner Dimond, Leland Dimond and her stepmother Frances Dimond.

Mrs. Stelmat grew up in Boston where she went to Girls High School and worked at John Hancock organizing outings for the ‘girls’. One outing to a USO dance is where she met the love of her life, Dick, who she was married to for 68 years. She proudly served as an Army wife moving every few years around the country with their four children. After Dick’s retirement from the Army they settled in South Windsor, CT, where they lived for over 50 years before moving to Summerville, SC. Besides John Hancock, Gladys worked at Connecticut Bank and Trust (CBT) as a transaction processor, Moriarty Research as a market researcher, and the US Census Bureau as a field representative.

Gladys enjoyed her family, helping others, and traveling the world. She loved to have numerous family get-togethers and to entertain her grandchildren as much as possible. She volunteered most of her life including over 25 years for American Red Cross Disaster Services around the country to help at fires, floods, and in New York City in the days after 9/11. Gladys loved to plan trips, traveling with Dick to over 63 countries and over 40 cruises. She wanted to experience everything on these trips from riding a camel in Egypt to having a python wrapped around her shoulders in Key West.

Besides her husband, she leaves her children, Ann Stelmat, Michael Stelmat and his wife Carolyn, Laura Gworek and her husband James, and Lawrence Stelmat and his wife Stacey; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Leland Dimond, Gordon Dimond.
