Born in Charleston in 1935 the son of George P. Runey, Sr., and Cecile Taylor Runey, peacefully passed away Tuesday evening. He shared this moment with his wife of 52 years, Joanna.
George was happily retired from the retail sales industry. He served Ward 8 as a Charleston City Councilman from 1965-1969.
As an avid outdoorsmen, George enjoyed memberships in Charlie Woods Hunting Club, The Sea Island Sports Fisherman's Club and faithfully attended the "Men's Night Out" every Friday evening at The Island Club.
Along with his wife he leaves behind his son, George Patrick Runey III (Stacey); daughter, Genevieve R. Sargent (Jeff); sister, Johanna R. Tapio; brother, Wylie A. Runey; three grandchildren, Ella Runey, James Runey, and Chase Sargent; several nieces and nephews, many loving friends; and his companion dogs, Paisley and Poppy.
The Family will receive friends at the Celebration of Life held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 4-7 PM at The Island Club, Hennessy Street, Sullivan's Island, SC 29482.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Charleston County Animal Society, 2455 Remount Rd, North Charleston, SC 29406 and Homestead Hospice, 7410 Northside Dr, #100, North Charleston, SC 29420.
