VARY, George Folk, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away suddenly on June 22, 2018 at age 69. He died in Roper St. Francis Hospital, listening to Ella Fitzgerald with his wife Liz, his daughter Elizabeth and his son Crispin.
A graduate of Deerfield Academy, Harvard College (where he was “the voice of Harvard Hockey” on the college radio) and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, George’s successful career at Breed, Abbot & Morgan in New York City, led to senior legal and executive positions at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio and Washington, DC.
A long-time resident of Bethesda, MD, George for many years was the Executive Director of the American Zinc Association. A master chef and an avid and skilled golfer, he and Liz moved to the Charleston area after George retired.
In addition to his wife and children, George is survived by his sisters Nancy Vary and Betsy Vary, his daughter-in-law Katie Vary and his beloved Golden Retriever, Boo. His brother Thomas Vary predeceased him. George was blessed with copious talents and spontaneous wit; he endowed his many friends with spontaneous laughter over many happy years.
A visitation will be held Monday, June 25 at 5PM-7PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, 29464.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, SC 29468. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
