Mr. George D. Strickland, 89, of Charleston and husband of the late Betty L. Miller Strickland, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016. George Strickland was born on August 11, 1926 in Charleston, SC to the late John Marshall Strickland and the late Agnes Riley Strickland. He married Betty, his wife of 56 years, on September 8, 1948. George served in the United States Navy and retired as a supervisor from MacAlloy in 1996 after 49 years of service. He was a member of the Church of the Nativity for over 45 years and sat in Adoration for over 15 years at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. George was the 12th of 14 children and enjoyed watching sports, working in his yard and spending time with his family. Survivors include his 6 children; JoAnn S. McGinnigle, Barbara Jean (Bill) Jensen and Michael John Strickland of James Island, Theresa L. (James) McGuckin of West Ashley, Thomas D. Strickland of Charleston and Rosemary (Mark) Schaffer of Johns Island; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer (Ben) DeLong of Newport, KY, Brandi (Mark) Whittard and Michael Yarborough of West Ashley, Theresa and William Jensen of James Island, Jack Schaffer of Johns Island, SC, Rodney Strickland of Frostproof, FL and Kimberly Michelle of Frostproof, FL; 4 great-granddaughters, Autumn Hunt and Lilly Reynolds of West Ashley, Cali Sky Masano and Ava Rain Redman of Frostproof, FL; 1 great-grandson, William Eason Jensen of Seneca, SC; 2 special brothers-in-law, Joseph Arnot of Columbia, SC and Frank Teske of Dunwoody, GA and a very special sister-in-law, Kay Strickland of James Island. George was blessed with a wonderful family, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 6-8pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel with the Rosary being recited at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11am on Friday, January 15, 2016 at The Church of the Nativity, 1061 Folly Rd., Charleston, SC. Rite of Christian Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Park, 3715 Azalea Dr., North Charleston, SC 29405.
