Gary Melvin Swain

Gary Melvin Swain, 76, of Charleston, SC died on Friday, April 8, 2016 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He was born on Saturday, November 25, 1939 in Charleston, SC to the late Mrs. Ethel Swain and the late Mr. Raymond Regis Swain Sr. Gary was a graduate of Bishop England High School and Palmer Business College. He worked as dock manager for the Chiquita Banana International Co. and then retired as an Insurance Agent for American General specializing in the home service market in Mt. Pleasant. Gary enjoyed watching Notre Dame Football and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, keeping up with Fox News and the Weather Channel, and spending time with his family. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Mary A. Swain, of North Charleston, SC; three daughters, Cindy S. Poole, of Summerville, SC, Renee S. Moody (Ken), of Moncks Corner, SC, Suzanne S. Wilson (Yancey), of Summerville, SC; two step-daughters, Sheila S. Murray (Joel), of Charleston, SC, and Laura M Creel, of Apex, NC; one step-son, Albert E. Miller III (Sherry), of Charleston, SC; two brothers, James C. Swain (Brenda), of Lorton, VA, and Leonard A. Swain, of Jamestown, SC; two sisters, Nancy S. Jager (George), of Charleston, SC and Ethel S. Backus, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his loving parents; and five brothers, Robert R. Swain Sr., Donald W. Swain Sr., Raymond R. Swain Jr., David C. Swain and Carl C. Swain. A Funeral Service will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Caring Voices Coalition Inc., 8249 Meadowbridge Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
