Fred L. Bennett, 80, of James Island, died January 30, 2015. Born in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Albert Derrell and Evelyn Kirkland Bennett and husband to Ida Bennett. Fred graduated from the University of South Carolina, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering and also was a member of Pi Kappa Phi. After college he joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He was a Plank Owner for Naval Electronics Systems Engineering and SPAWAR, retiring as an electrical engineer. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks, Past President of Stono River Golf Association, lifetime member of James Island Yacht Club, coached Little League and was on the board at James Island YMCA. He loved to play golf and fish. Fred is survived by his wife of fifty seven years, Ida Lynn Bennett; three sons, Rick Bennett and wife Julie of Huger, Russell Bennett and wife Pam Cate, Chuck Bennett and wife Paula of Mt. Pleasant; daughter, Nancy Taylor and husband John of Huntersville, NC; grandchildren, R.B., Lynn, Taylor, Zoey, Bryson, Darby and Wesley; great grandson, Beau; brother, Burton Bennett of Greensboro, NC; sister, Rebecca Bennett of Columbia. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Highway. Burial will follow with military honors in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, February 2, 2015 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, JAMES ISLAND CHAPEL.
