Evelyn Williams Zimmer

Evelyn Williams Zimmer, 103 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 3, 2022.

Born on June 4, 1919, in Murphysboro, IL, she was the daughter of the late Rose Smith Williams and George Levi Williams.

After growing up in southern Illinois during the Great Depression, she worked during World War II in the Quad Cities sub-Office of the Chief of Ordinance where she met her future husband, Robert Zimmer, an Army ordnance officer. They were married three months later, just before then Captain Zimmer received orders assigning him to China for two years. Upon his return, they settled in Lancaster PA, where they raised their daughter, Janet.

In Lancaster, Evelyn was active in the Manheim Township Auxiliary to the Lancaster General Hospital, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and the Reserve Officers Association Ladies Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Towne Club, the Iris Club Players, the Quadrille Dance Club, the Hamilton Club, and the Meadia Heights Country Club. In addition, she was a Manheim Township Republican Committeewoman for 16 years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster.

After retirement, Bob and Evelyn moved to Cheshire CT and Evelyn then moved to Mount Pleasant SC to be close to her daughter.

Evelyn enjoyed playing golf, bridge, bingo, and painting with watercolors. She also loved to travel, having toured much of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), throughout Western European and Iceland, numerous Caribbean islands, and China. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Robert Clare Zimmer, father George Williams, mother Rose Williams Bethel, brothers Vergil Williams and Norman Williams, and sister Eileen Williams Montgomery.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter Janet Zimmer and her son-in-law Gene D'Agostino.
