Esther Ann Rodgers Chaplin, 97, of Rantowles, South Carolina, widow of the late Arthur “Sleepy” DeLancy Chaplin, Sr., entered into eternal rest Monday, April 3, 2023.
Esther Ann was born October 23, 1925, in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late James Rufus Rodgers and the late Gladys Rodgers Goodwin. She was predeceased by her sisters: Lillian Baldwin (Laurie), Sissy Welch (Silas), and Dot Searson (Baggot). She was also predeceased by her son, Mark Chaplin of Rantowles, SC.
Esther Ann graduated from St. Paul’s High School. She also graduated from Rice Business College. She was a member of Ravenel United Methodist Church.
She was a devoted wife and mother. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and tending to her rose garden.
Esther Ann worked as a stenographer at the Charleston Naval Shipyard during the war. She later became a dispatcher for the Charleston County Police Department, from which she retired. She loved traveling abroad with her daughter, Anne. Some places they visited were Germany, Israel and Guam.
She is survived by her children, Lance Chaplin (Winkie) of Moncks Corner, SC and Anne Artuz (Art) of Rantowles, SC; her grandchildren: Lane Chaplin (Susan) of Flower Mound, TX; Tyler Chaplin of Moncks Corner, SC; Jonathan Chaplin (Dorathea) of Charleston, SC; Michelle Scott (J.J.) of Charleston, SC and Ryanne Dodds of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her great-grandchildren: Quinn and Brooks Chaplin of Flower Mound, TX and Carter Chaplin of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her brother, Jim Rodgers (Billie, deceased) and many loved nephews and nieces. We cannot forget her little Elvis, Sophie and Sherman, too.
Excellent care was given to Esther Ann by the staff at Sandpiper Assisted Living in Mount Pleasant. The family would like to thank Mona, Diamond, Nikka, Veronica, Emiline and Cheryl for the special care they gave her. We would also like to thank Crescent Hospice for the compassion shown during this time.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, April 7, 2023, at Ravenel United Methodist Church, 6035 Drayton Street, Ravenel, SC 29470.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be given to Ravenel Cemetery or Charleston Animal Society.
