Sgt. Maj. Ernest J. Turner (Ret.), 69, of Goose Creek, passed away January 16, 2014. Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Charles and Deloise Rapelyea and husband to Linda Turner. After high school, he joined the United States Army and served for thirty years, retiring as a Sergeant Major. He served during Vietnam and was proud to be a paratrooper assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Mr. Turner worked as a truck driver and a contract monitor at the Charleston Air Force Base. He is survived by his wife, Linda Turner; two daughters, Yvonne Turner of Goose Creek and Nicole Turner of Charleston; granddaughter, Autumn Turner of Charleston; four brothers, Charles Rapelyea of Tampa, FL, Melvin Rapelyea of Betterton, MD, Brian Rapelyea of New York and Kevin Rapelyea of New York. A celebration of Ernest’s life will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, GOOSE CREEK CHAPEL. Burial will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Doc Williams SPCA, 502 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461.
