Ellen Stokes Torlay (Stokes)

Ellen Stokes Torlay, of Mt. Pleasant, SC entered into eternal rest the afternoon of April 1, 2016 with friends and family by her side. She was 81 and the daughter of the late Mrs. Annie R. Stokes and the late Mr. Walter T. Stokes, and the wife of Mr. John T. Torlay Jr. with whom she would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on June 23, 1956. Ellen graduated from Bishop England High School in 1953. She worked for a short period with Overseas Forwarders, was a substitute teacher at Wando H.S. and was an active member of Christ Our King Catholic Church where she served in many church activities. Ellen’s true profession was motherhood to which she devoted a full measure. She was good at it and never stopped trying to help and guide her children and grandchildren. Ellen was an original member of the “Tuna Fish Club” which was first started by a group of girls while students at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. This group continues to meet monthly to pray and celebrate their friendship. Her family will remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John T. Torlay Jr., of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Her children, Johnny Torlay (Susie), Michele Westberry (Bill), Steven Torlay (Ingrid), and Daniel Torlay (Sharon), all of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Lauren Kursh (Justin), Ryan Westberry, Nicole Westberry, Rachel Torlay, John Michael Torlay, and Lucas Torlay , all of Mt. Pleasant; one great grandson, Joseph Kursh, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The rosary will be recited at 5:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ Our King Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in her honor to Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Drive, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
