Elizabeth Lane Johnson, 92, of Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2023.
Born on November 15, 1930, in Portsmouth, VA, she was the daughter of the late Edna Ward Lane and Walter James Lane.
Elizabeth, known lovingly as Libby, graduated from Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA in 1947 and went on to attend Keys Business School. She met the love of her life while she was working as a secretary at Swift & Company. She and Jim married in 1949 and went on to have five children. After living in Staunton, VA, they moved back to Norfolk, where the family was active at Calvin Presbyterian Church. She served in many leadership roles as well as singing in the choir. She continued to be active in other churches as the family moved to Houston, TX; Rome, GA; Columbia, SC; and settled in Charleston. In the early days of Tupperware, she won many awards for her sales. She then went on to work as a Civil Service secretary for many years until retiring in 1996.
Libby spent her final years at a senior living home, Ashley Park, where she loved eating meals with her friends and playing Bingo and Rummikub. Her loving caregivers through Tender Touches provided joy to her and her family. She enjoyed taking gambling trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas, cruising with her daughter, spending time with her grandchildren and visiting with family. Her family will remember her as a loving wife, mother, Nana and friend.
Besides her parents, Libby is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 66 years, James Boyd Johnson, Jr. She is survived by her children: Cheryl J. Carawan (Tom); James B. Johnson (Beth); Cynthia L. Johnson; Craig S. Johnson and Christi L. Van Slooten (Chad); 11 grandchildren: Jenny, Cady, Paige, Jamie, Shawn, Jerrod, Alexis, Rachael, Shelby, CJ, and Shay and five great-grandchildren: Kellan, Leyton, Draven, Millie, Rhett, and Wren.
