Eleanor Watson Hamburger, widow of Carl Leo Hamburger, of Columbia, SC died peacefully Sunday at Somerby of Mt. Pleasant Retirement Community. She was born in Marion County, SC in 1920 and was a daughter of the late Furman Bee and Martha Lanier (Linnie) Bond Watson. She was a graduate of Latta High School, Latta, SC and Colette’s Beauty School in Columbia, SC. She is survived by her eight children: Mary Lynn Guettler (Edward) of Rock Hill, SC, Katherine Patricia Smith of Ridgeland, SC, Eleanor Carol Caggiano of Spartanburg, SC, Martha Ann Spotts (David) of Snellville, GA, Alice Elizabeth Sloan (James Bond) of Rock Hill, SC, Estella Marie Hazel (Samuel) of Walterboro, SC, Donald Joseph Hamburger (Betsy) of Columbia, SC and Charles David Hamburger of Mt. Pleasant, SC.She is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Joseph E. Smith, III, Eleanor S. Wall, Mary C. Ashby, James V. Caggiano, Jr., Katherine S. Dingee, David A. Spotts, Jr., Carl F. Sloan, Alline E. Sloan, Sharon H. Witkin, Carolyn H. DeBruhl, Michelle H. Strickland, F. E. Ella Hamburger, William A. Hamburger, J. Austin Hamburger, J. Ross Hamburger, and J. Dalton Hamburger; and 14 Great-grandchildren: Callie Smith, Hampton Wall, Olivia Wall, Harrison Wall, Spencer Ashby, Thomas Ashby, Mason Ashby, Isabella Caggiano, Jackson Dingee, Willis Dingee, Michael Witkin, Samuel Witkin, John Thomas DeBruhl, and Eleanor DeBruhl . Plus, many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 14, 2015 from 6 to 7 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, followed by a Vigil Prayer Service beginning at 7 pm. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held in Columbia, SC at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow in St. Peters Cemetery. Her family wishes to extend their appreciation and thanks to all those who loved and cared for her, especially the staff at Somerby of Mt. Pleasant, Transitions Hospice Care and the parishioners at St. Benedict Catholic Church.
