Edward James “Red” Shanley entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 5, 2018. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 93. It’s a very sad day for all who knew him.
Born in Lowell, MA on January 26, 1925, the son of the late Agnes Moylan and William C. Shanley, his early education began at St. Peter’s Catholic School. Red graduated from Lowell High School (Class of 1941). He went on to receive his law degree from Suffolk Law School, Boston, MA after getting married and raising five children.
A U.S. Navy World War II veteran who served in the South Pacific, he was proud of his service to our country. He was appreciative to have been chosen to travel on the 2010 Honor Flight to Washington, DC and to be honored at the World War II Memorial.
Red retired after a successful career working as a Right of Way agent for a large telecommunications company in Massachusetts. In 2001, Red and his wife Irene moved to Mount Pleasant to be closer to family. Family was most important to both of them.
Red had a wonderful sense of humor, a kind heart and a generous spirit. He was known for his stories and those that knew him will treasure their favorites. He was a lover of Dixieland jazz, never said no to a party or missed an opportunity to get up and dance. He was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed.
His legacy is his family: daughters Agnes (Robert) Matheson of Summerville, SC and Dorothy (Wayne) Morgan of Mount Pleasant, SC; son David Shanley of Mount Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Sarah (James) Wood of New Orleans, LA, Megan (Harold) Melton of Statham, GA, Eric Matheson of Charlotte, NC, Gregory (Kristen) Moore of Erie, Colorado and Katie (Dom) Sideri of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; great grandchildren include John Beckett Wood, Cameron and Colin Moore, Piper and Robin Kate Sideri.
Red was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Irene Krupowicz Shanley in 2010; son Edward J. Shanley, Jr. in 1963; and daughter Patricia Shanley Moore in 1994.
The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Rex Morgan and the staff at Somerby of Mount Pleasant who cared for him.
A celebration of Red’s life will be held, Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:30 AM at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. PLEASANT. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Lowell, MA.
