Edward (Ed) Anthony Ankersen, 72, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
Born on November 10, 1951 in Charleston, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Mary Klein Ankersen and the late Benjamin Franklin Ankersen, Sr.
Ed graduated from Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Ed played many sports growing up and excelled as a baseball pitcher on several levels, including high school (J.L. Mann and Moultrie); college as the MVP player in his freshman season (The Baptist College at Charleston/Charleston Southern University); West Ashley American Legion and the Charleston Semi-Pro League.
Ed was a research analyst and retired from Mead/Westvaco. He also served in the National Guard. He was an avid boater and especially loved being on the Wando River shrimping. He was a faithful follower of the SC Gamecocks, win or lose. A man of many talents; he was proficient in woodworking, furniture making, drawing, baseball facts, math, science, cooking, shrimping and the gift of gab. Ed enjoyed telling his tall tales that were incredible true stories of his adventures. He had the skills of a comedian. In college, he pointed to a new girl in the registration line and told his cousin "That’s the girl I am going to marry", and he did. Family and friends were always eager to hear Ed’s newest, true tall tales, which were priceless.
Most of all, Ed was dedicated to his family and friends, always responding to calls for assistance. He supported his sons in their endeavors, challenges and triumphs. He was committed and volunteered countless hours at his sons’ baseball games in high school and college. Ed always helped family and friends. His sisters said that you will never find a man with a kinder heart.
In addition to his parents, Ed is predeceased by his brother Benjamin Ankersen, Jr., a nephew Keith Stewart and a niece Beth Bailey.
Ed’s loving survivors include Lynne, his wife of 50 years; his sons Kelly, Kyle and Karl; his granddaughter Grace Lyn Ankersen, to whom he was devoted; Mary Bailey (sister), Ruth Wilson (sister) David Ankersen (brother) Teresa Ankersen (sister) and sister Rebecca Long (Donald), in addition to many cousins, nieces and nephews.
