Edna Brown Peavey died at her home on August 1, 2023, surrounded by her immediate family. Her death was the result of an in-home injury suffered on July 10, 2023.
Edna was born on September 1, 1936, in Johnston County, NC, the first of five children born to Daniel E. and Mildred Wiggs Brown.
As a young child she lived in eastern North Carolina in Princeton, Goldsboro, Tarboro, and Rocky Mount before her parents settled in Greenville where she would finish her formal education at Greenville High School. For most of the years after her graduation from high school she worked in the criminal division of the Office of the Clerk of Superior Court of Pitt County, NC. In 1976 she and Michael P. Peavey were married. They briefly lived in Norcross, Georgia and then for many years in Wilson, North Carolina, where he practiced law.
Edna was predeceased by a son Daniel Burnette Tetterton of James Island, SC. She is survived by her husband Michael of the home, her much beloved son Jonathan, his wife Meg and their two children: Caleb, age 8, and Emeline, 18 months old, all of Mount Pleasant.
By the time they were married she knew that Michael, a graduate of The Citadel, intended one day to return to Charleston. Early in February 2013, shortly before Jonathan and Meg were married, Edna told Michael that she would be ready when he decided to move to SC. Not one to waste time and not willing to risk Edna changing her mind, within a few days he began the process of closing the law practice he had conducted for many years at 404 Broad Street in Wilson. On May 1, 2014, they moved into what would be their last home together, in Mount Pleasant, SC. Her final years were happy for her because she lived near those whom she loved the most.
In 1983 Edna and Michael adopted a young boy who was living in South Korea. He grew up in Wilson attending Greenfield School from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. He in turn graduated from The Citadel. Her love for Jonathan might have been matched by that of her husband. She was a devoted mother who took much joy in that role. She told her mother and often told Michael that the happiest days of her life were those spent raising Jonathan. Their home in Wilson at 1014 Timberlake Drive where Jonathan grew up was filled with laughter.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Seacoast Church Chapel, 750 Long Point Rd., Mount Pleasant, SC. Officiating the service will be Pastor Michael Morris. The service will be live streamed online for any who would like to attend virtually: https://seacoastevents.online.church/
Her immediate family requests that to honor her memory and her devotion to Jonathan, in lieu of flowers more lasting memorials be made by donations to Gift of Adoption South Carolina Chapter.
