Dorothy Jo Sox Cook

November 1, 1930 — January 27, 2022

Dorothy Jo Sox Cook passed away January 27, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born in the Longbranch, SC Community, now Springdale, on November 1, 1930; her Grandmother Hattie Elizabeth Wingard Hook's 51st birthday. Her parents were Clarence Lewie and Ella Gladys Hook Sox. She graduated from Brookland Cayce High School in 1947. After graduation, she would walk to the South Carolina Area Trade School to become a Cosmetologist. After completion she worked at Belk's on Main Street in Columbia. She married Kenneth Ray Cook of Edgefield, SC on November 27, 1955. They met on a blind date arranged by Ken's cousin Lib (Hair) Ross and married after a 3-week courtship. They were married for 64 years until Ken's death, in 2019. Kenneth and Dorothy had four children, Kenneth Ray Cook, Jr., (1956-1959), Kimberly Rae Cook Stavrinakis (Michael), Kelley Renee Cook Mintz (Edward) and Karey Randall Cook (Debra). A lifelong Lutheran, Dorothy was regularly active in her Church teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Confirmation. She was also chair of the bereavement meals committee for many years as well as serving as chair of the Altar Guild. She served on the church council and the pastoral call committee. Always willing to help whenever needed, in the early 1970s, Dorothy coordinated donations for refugee families resettling in Charleston as part of her church's ministry. She was a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout den mother. She was also highly active with the March of Dimes, chairing the Mother's March Walk a Thon for many years where she consistently led in total donations. She volunteered many years at the Charleston Naval hospital as a nurse assistant in the OB/Gyn clinic. She was an incredible cook and always gracious hostess. All were welcomed in her home no matter what time or how many. She shared her gifts by starting her own catering business dazzling many with her culinary skills and decorating expertise. Children always held a special place in her heart, and she made herself available, whatever the need. Dot was a humble servant that touched many lives through her example of giving.
