Dorothy B Flott

December 31, 1925 — February 16, 2015

Dorothy Biggs Flott, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina died on Monday, February 16, 2015 in Mt. Pleasant. Dorothy was born December 31, 1925 in South Colby, Washington to the late Dorothy Edith Rice and Alfred Edward Biggs. Dorothy attended the University of Washington. In 1946 she married her loving husband Robert. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Carpenter, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina and her son, Robert Flott (Mary), of Alamo, California. She also has two grandchildren, Christopher Carpenter and Kelsey Margaret Flott, two great granddaughters Ava Sinclaire Carpenter and Aisley Ann Carpenter, and two sisters Mary Alice Budd and Carol Elizabeth Harlow (John), and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her devoted husband of 40 years. Living for the past six years in Mt. Pleasant, Dorothy spent 60 years as a resident of Chicago where she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. As a dedicated community member she was a Girl Scout board member and troop leader. As a decades long member of the Ridge Book of the Hour Club and 35 years in the Great Books Society, Dorothy used her love for books to pursue a lifelong education through reading and discussion. She also enjoyed bridge games with friends and getting outdoors for golf. She regularly attended Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts and frequently visited the Art Institute of Chicago as a member of the museum. Dorothy was an excellent gardener and took pride each year in her flowers and green vegetable gardens. Anyone who knew Dorothy knew her greatest passion was travel. There was no location too far, no place she found uninteresting, and no culture too foreign for her travel plans. Again she used her travel as a tool for her education, always seeking to understand more of the world around her. She explored 5 continents travelling with friends and family. Her meticulously detailed travel scrapbooks will remain as a cherished library for her family. She instilled in her family her enthusiasm for discovering the world and encouraged their respect for nature and the great outdoors. All who knew Dorothy felt her influence and presence. She will be missed by her family and all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday February 21st at First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms with Rev. Pastor Thomas Smith officiating. Memorial donations may be made in Dorothy’s honor to First United Methodist Church, Isle of Palms, 12 21st Avenue, Isle of Palms SC 29451.
