Doran Edward Matthew Cook

Doran Edward Matthew Cook, 34, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

Born on August 12, 1989, in Charleston, SC, Matt was the son of Fiona Cooper Jenkins and Doran ‘Ed’ Cook.

Matt loved to garden, a hobby he learned from his grandparents, Doran and Betty Cook, with whom he spent many hours gardening as a child. The love of feeling earth between his fingers was cemented within his close relationship with his ‘Mama’ and ‘Papa’ Cook. Matt always grew fresh herbs, which he used in his cooking. He was an accomplished cook, too, and was happiest when he was in the kitchen conjuring up culinary delights. Matt also adored his adventurous Aunt Karen who took him on many trips, both at home and abroad. Matt had an amazing voice and loved to sing Johnny Cash songs at Karaoke. He enjoyed shooting on an APA pool league for many years and made it to Las Vegas after one of his teams won the local championship. Matt proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. Matt worked for Cirsea Creamery for many years and earned a certificate of Gelato Artisan from the Culinary Institute of Florence, Italy. He helped take 1st place in the James Beard House, East Coast World Gelato Tour and represented Cirsea Creamery to compete for America in the Gelato World Tour, Italy. While at the Gelato World Tour, Italy, he also earned himself the title of Fastest Gelato Scooper. Matt was an eccentric soul who made lifelong friendships. He was incredibly witty and loving. When Matt wrapped his arms around you, you knew you were truly loved. Matt touched many lives and will be missed by everyone who had the honor of knowing him.

Matt is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Doran Cook and his maternal grandparents, George and Blanche Cooper.

Matt is survived by his mother, Fiona Jenkins; father, Doran ‘Ed’ Cook; stepfather, Marcus Jenkins; grandmother, Elma Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cook; aunt, Karen Fultz Walker; uncle, Iain Cooper; sisters, Katharine Cook and Brooke Jones (Rustin); brother, James Jesse ‘JJ’ Jenkins (Lisa); nieces: Shayleigh Cook, Piper Jones and Beba Jenkins; nephew, Fletcher Jones; and fiancé, Mary Robbins ‘Robbi’ Amick and their dog, Odin.
