Born on March 31, 1951 in New London, CT he was the son of the late Barbara Jean (BJ) Northrop (Eaton) and Donald V. Northrop Sr.

Don was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his wife Patty of 53 years and to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was always there to give advice, lend an ear, make you laugh or “boot you in the pants” with the crazy random facts he knew, his simple wisdom and jokes or stories. You could always find him in a sports stand cheering them on or playing Santa for the grandchildren. He loved to go out on his boat or work around his shop. Don enjoyed animals, esp. his dogs, model trains, his fountains and building things whether making furniture for his grandson’s first home or refurbishing old iron benches to give as gifts to family and friends.

Don proudly served in the United States Navy and retired as a Senior Chief in 1989 after 20 years of service. He continued to be a part of several submarine vet and Navy groups and organizations. After his military retirement He worked at the Charleston shipyard and then worked his way up in the trucking industry at Basso American to Regional Manager before retiring again and becoming the chauffeur to his grandchildren. He was a mentor to many, a good friend and shipmate. Known for his outgoing personality and humor he never met a stranger and was always good for a story. His friendships were forever.
