Diane Lynne Voelker, 63, of Daniel Island, South Carolina died Saturday, April 29, 2017 after a lengthy and courageous battle against a rare form of cancer.
She was born on October 26, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan to Robert and Evelyn (Svoboda) Berner. She married Ensign George Voelker in June, 1972 and began a life as a Navy wife that lasted more than 30 years and spread across more than fifteen locations in the United States and abroad before settling down in Northern Virginia for 12 years -- the longest stay in any location in her entire life. She retired to Daniel Island in May, 2016.
She was the mother of three wonderful children: Timothy, Christopher, and Katherine. She frequently told friends and acquaintences that being a Mom was without question the very best part of her life.
She worked as a nurse for nearly twenty years -- first as an ICU nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina followed by positions in other ICU’s in Virginia and Hawaii. After taking a break to be a full time Mom, she returned to work for ten years as a school nurse in Northern Virginia, completing her years of service to others as the nurse to more than 1,900 students at Stone Bridge High School in Loudoun County.
She was an avid runner, completing multiple marathons and half-marathons.
She loved to garden and spent many hours carefully watching over the scores of plants surrounding her house.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, George; son, Timothy; son Christopher and daughter-in-law, Hannah; daughter, Katherine; Mother, Jean Berner; Father, Robert Berner and spouse Linda; and her three sisters, Gail, Christy, and Janice.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Our Saviors Way Lutheran Church at 43115 Waxpool Road, Ashburn, VA 20148 on Monday, May 22nd at 5:30 in the evening.
A private burial service for the family will follow at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
