David Edward 'Ed' Small

David 'Ed' Edward Small, 88, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2015. He was born on Monday, March 7, 1927, in Salisbury, NC, to the late Helen Shumaker Small and the late David Otis Small. Ed grew up in North Carolina. He served in the US Navy for two years as a hospital apprentice. After his service in the Navy, Ed graduated from Pfeiffer Junior College and Clemson College, with a degree in vocational agriculture. He managed W. B. Camp and Sons Cattle Farm in Gaffney, SC for 50 years. Ed was the founder and first president of the Cherokee County Cattlemen’s Association, a SC representative in the National Cattlemen’s Association, a member of the Hereford Association, and a commissioner of agriculture representing Cherokee and Spartanburg counties. He was a deacon and a ruling elder at Limestone Presbyterian Church in Gaffney, SC and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. Ed was a life member in the Elks Lodge 1305, the VFW and Rotary Club of Gaffney. Ed enjoyed watching and attending Clemson sporting events, hunting and fishing, camping, traveling and was an avid gardener. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather with a tender-heart and an infectious smile. Ed truly loved life. Besides his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his brother, Steve Small. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane Mauney Small of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Carole Small Russell and her husband, Walter, of Charleston, SC and Karen Small Whitley and her husband, Scott, of Asheville, NC; two grandchildren: Matthew Whitley and his wife, Marion, of Orlando, FL and David Whitley of Lynchburg, VA; a brother, Robert Gerald Small of Kerrville, TX; two sisters: Betty Zoe Sandri of Mooresville, NC and Barbara Gribble of Cary, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express special thanks to the Hospice of Charleston staff for their compassionate care of Ed and his loved ones. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 23, 2015, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, August 24, 2015, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1157 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Charleston, SC 29407, with Rev. Dr. Daniel Smoak officiating. Burial will take place at 3:00pm on Tuesday, August, 25, 2015, in the Frederick Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 986 Chesnee Highway, Gaffney, SC 29341.
