Cathleen Mary Heim

Cathleen Mary Heim, 56, of Charleston, passed away June 24, 2014 surrounded by her family. Cathleen was born November 15th, 1957 in Washington, DC to George and Mary Byrnes Heim. She attended the University of Virginia, Friends World College and the College of St. Rose. She moved to Charleston in 2005. Her family remembers her as a champion of the disenfranchised and women’s rights. She was a loving caregiver to family members and always willing to help anyone in need. Her nieces and nephews adored Cathleen for all that she gave them; always willing to play or join any game. Her enjoyment of life and eternal optimism kept her young. She enjoyed the arts, photography, travel and cinematography. She was an avid volunteer her entire life and was very appreciative of being a volunteer of the year at the Center for Women in 2007. Theatre was a particular passion of hers and she attended numerous productions locally. Before moving to Charleston, Cathleen enjoyed living and working in many different locations. As a child, she lived in various states, Morocco and the Canal Zone. Cathleen preferred urban living; working in Alaska, Oregon, New York, D.C., Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Massachusetts. She also lived in Guatemala and Scotland. Cathleen is survived by her parents Mary and George Heim, her brothers Michael (Anne Marie), Matthew (Heather), Andrew (Debra); her sisters Tricia Heim and Allison Heim Laurenza (John) and her nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends in the Charleston area on Saturday June 28, 2014 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel, 2501 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414.
