Catherine Louise Rogers, 70, entered into rest at her residence in Mount Pleasant, SC on May 10, 2024. Cathy was born on July 25, 1953 in Florence SC to the late Forester Hannibal Rogers and Thelma Giles Rogers. She is predeceased by her sister Marie Wood.
Cathy is survived by her brother Dennis Rogers of Johnston, SC, nephews James (Jim) Wood of Aiken, SC and Jonathan Wood of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and brother-in-law Butch (Melissa) Wood of Edgefield, SC. She was especially proud of her niece Layla Grace Dorland and her great-niece Jane Marie Wood.
Since Cathy’s birthday was July 25th she loved to celebrate her birthday as “Christmas in July”. She would always bring gifts for everyone who was there to celebrate HER. Her family, friends and her little dog Mazie will deeply miss her and remember her as a kind, gentle soul who always put others’ needs before her own.
Cathy knew she wanted to be a nurse when she was eleven years old. Her Dad was sick with cancer and her Mom could not give the needed medication. Cathy said, “I want to try”. The doctors agreed and then realized she was good at giving him the morphine shots. Her Dad was
able to come home from the hospital only because Cathy could administer the medication as needed.
A passion for nursing was a continuous thread throughout her life. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the Medical University of SC College of Nursing in 1975. She began her nursing journey as a “Burn Unit Nurse” at MUSC where she excelled in the care of her patients and their families. The entire nursing and medical staff recognized early on her compassion, her abilities and her dedication to the nursing profession. She was later promoted to “Night Shift Supervisor” and was responsible for the entire nursing staff from 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM for years. Even at the end of a shift she rarely left until every detail was successfully handled. Her next leadership position was with the Department of Health Information Technology in the Obstetrics-Gynecology Department, where she combined her nursing expertise with IT knowledge to spearhead numerous upgrades to the OB-GYN computer systems. She remained in that position until her retirement in 2022.
Cathy will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her and working with her in her 51 years at MUSC. Her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to nursing has inspired and uplifted those whose lives she touched. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Saint Luke’s Chapel on the campus of MUSC, 181 Ashley Avenue, (corner of Ashley Ave. and Bee St.), with a reception to follow. A scholarship in Cathy’s honor is being established at the MUSC College of Nursing: the Catherine L. Rogers Scholarship Fund.
