Catherine "Kitty" Ann Bean Harrington, 87, born January 12th, 1934 at Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, died Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021 at Baptist Health South Hospital in Montgomery, AL. She was the daughter of the late William J. Bean, Sr. and Nellie Cecelia Hoppmann Bean.
A proud Charleston native, Kitty grew up on Wentworth Street in downtown. She was a graduate of Saint Joseph's School and Bishop England High School. She attended the College of Charleston for two years until her father became ill. She then began working at the Charleston Navy Yard as a Payroll Clerk to help support her parents.
In 1953, she met the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Francis Harrington, a Navy sailor who served on the USS Tanager. The two met dancing at Cathedral Hall on Queen Street. Their most cherished song to dance to was "For All We Know". They were married on November 26th, 1955, at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Charleston. She began staying at home full time with her sons as they started their family.
Kitty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was an active member of Christ Our King Catholic Church, where she volunteered in church organizations and for Christ Our King-Stella Maris School where she served as a recess yard mother. She was a founding member and served as President of the ladies' group, OLOPS. She was involved in various social clubs where she enjoyed playing card games such as bridge, tripoli, and bunco with her beloved friends. She watched every episode of her favorite TV program, "Jeopardy!", faithfully, missing only one time for childbirth! After raising her children, Kitty enjoyed traveling with her husband, visiting many countries, and all 50 States.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Richie Harrington; brothers, William Bean Jr., Joseph Bean, Thomas Bean; and sister, Ethel Bean Klein. She is survived by her husband, Dick; three sons, Richard Francis Harrington Jr. (Anna-Marie), Stephen Thomas Harrington, Paul William Harrington; six grandchildren, Amy Harrington Behbooei (Moe), Adam Harrington, Georgie Harrington, Luke Harrington, Jack Harrington, Lia Harrington; brother-in-law, Albert Klein, Sr.; many adored nieces and nephews; and dear childhood friend, Peggy Youmans.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation, 1520 Rifle Range Road , Mount Pleasant, South Carolina 29464. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1122 Russell Drive, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina 29464, with interment to immediately follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina 29464
