Cmdr. (Retired) Caroline Jean Stoll, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, February 3, 2025, at Somerby Assisted Living facility.
Caroline was born in Cottleville, Missouri to Emil Stoll and Anna Alice Meyling on October 17, 1935.
She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Louis University in 1960 and became a registered nurse in the state of Missouri in November of 1960. She joined the Navy Nurse Corp as a Lieutenant in May of 1968. She served as a Midwife and truly saw the world. She was stationed in many places including San Diego, California, New Orleans, Louisiana, Naples, Italy, Groton, Connecticut, Portsmouth, Virginia, Rota, Spain and Charleston, South Carolina where she retired from active duty in June of 1992.
She was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, Nurse Corps in May of 1973. She was promoted to Commander, Nurse Corps in 1979.
After retirement she worked in urban Detroit at Hutzel Women’s Hospital before retiring in and around Charleston, SC with a brief break where she resided in Watertown, South Dakota.
As a midwife, Caroline delivered over 3,000 babies. Many of whom she remained in touch with and fondly knew her as Zia.
Caroline loved travel and her parish community and especially enjoyed spending time with her friends and her many nieces and nephews and their children and their children’s children. She was godmother to many.
She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Harvey (Evelyn), Francis and James (Rose), and her sisters Florence (Al) Protte and Mary Ann (Ed) Bode and a nephew, Greg Stoll.
She is survived by a sister-in-law Jackie Stoll and sixteen nieces and nephews: Susan Hirsch, Mark Stoll, David Protte, Gary Protte, Gloria Davis, Carol Ann Steib, Michael Stoll, Jerry Stoll, Tom Stoll, Larry Stoll, Patrick Stoll, Jim Jr. Stoll, Kevin Stoll, Maureen Friese, Ann Monday, and John Bode and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 11AM.
Memorials are suggested for St. Benedict or Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
