Brian Joseph Schmalzriedt of Summerville, SC passed away on July 8, 2023 surrounded by family.
Brian was born on October 10, 1949 in Bloomfield, New Jersey - his home state of 56 years. Well-known as a dedicated and determined individual, Brian graduated Saddle Brook High School in 1967 where he and his future wife, Brenda, became high school sweethearts. Throughout his teen years, in addition to school, Brian worked full-time to support his family and provided care for his infirm mother. After graduating high school, Brian married the love of his life, Brenda Metzger, to whom he was married for 53 years. In his early 20s, he began night school for drafting while simultaneously working full time at Circle Design, where he worked for 25 years. Brian eventually went out on his own to open his own business in 1989, becoming President and Owner of Compliance Services LLC until his passing. Over his 50+ years in the packaging and manufacturing industries, Brian
was known to be a trusted expert in his field, as well as, a fair and ethical businessman.
In addition to his resolute work ethic, Brian was equally committed to his family and friends. A beloved husband, father, and friend, Brian was always there for people - serving as a swim coach for Aqua Gems Swim Club in Warwick, NY for 10 years where he coached and mentored hundreds of kids throughout the Tri-State area. Brian was a committed resident of the Cliffwood Lake, NJ lake community for 28 years. Each year Brian would be seen during the summer helping to put the docks in, timing and judging for swim meets, playing beach volleyball and helping to host the annual lake party; in the fall, Brian would help with the annual Halloween parade; in the winter, Brian could always be counted on to help Santa pass out gifts each Christmas.
As dependable as he was generous, Brian will be remembered for his infectious laugh, and charismatic nature. Known as a jack-of-all-trades, he could build a deck in a single weekend, bake a stupendous lemon meringue pie and still find time to be at his children's practices. On the golf course, Brian's skill was rivaled by few, having three holes in one to his name. A diehard Yankees fan from birth, his love for the game and the pinstripes are shared by his family. Brian's passion for New Jersey was evident in his favorite meals, often including a Taylor Ham, egg and cheese, a dog from Hanks Franks, or a scorching hot pie from Pizza Town with extra oregano. Brian's life was marked by his everlasting marriage, opening his own business, and the memories he created and left behind.
Brian is survived by his wife Brenda Schmalzriedt; daughter Dawn (Schmalzriedt) Vollers and her husband Jon; son Todd Blake and his wife Meghan; grandchildren Griffin, Emilia, and Harrison; brother Gary Schmalzriedt; and sister Sandy (Schmalzriedt) Heuser.
Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Margaret Schmalzriedt; his brother, Billy.
A memorial service for Brian will be held on August 19th 2023 at 1:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral & Cremation, 869 St. James Avenue, Goose Creek, SC 29455.
