Benjamin “Tommy” Jones

Benjamin “Tommy” Jones, 77, of Chapin, SC peacefully passed away on July 25, 2023 surrounded by his high school sweetheart, Janice, and his three daughters.  

Tommy was born on June 21, 1946, in Kinston, NC where he attended high school at Grainger High School and joined the Army Reserves for 6 years. He then moved on to 50+ years in the Consumer Finance Industry.  He and Janice were married in August 1968 which was the beginning of a beautiful life that they built together. Tommy was an avid Clemson University Tiger fan who enjoyed time on the lake, helping others and spending quality time with friends and family.  He was best known as “Pap Pap” by his grandchildren and their friends.

In Waycross, Georgia he was a deacon at First Baptist of Waycross where he taught Sunday School in the Youth Department and led the Wednesday night youth program. Over the years, Tommy served on the Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina independent consumer finance boards. He and his wife are members of Chapin Christian Community Church, where he enjoyed being a greeter and chatting away with guests and members.  

Tommy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice, his daughters Laura Haynes (Kenny Haynes), Rebecca Lassiter (Walt Lassiter), Sarah Cross (John Cross), his grandchildren Emily Gass, Madison Gass, Brock Haynes, Jacob Lassiter, Abigail Cross, Jackson Cross, his sister Katy King, as well as extended family members.  He is preceded in death by Benjamin Franklin Jones (Father), Elizabeth Wallace Jones (Mother), and James Robert “Bob” Jones (Brother). 

In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials may be made to Chapin Christian Community Church, 415 Lexington Ave,Chapin, SC.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The family has entrusted McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation State Street with the handling of arrangements.
