Bartolo 'Barney' Anthony Merlino, 83, of Ravenel, SC, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Barney was born on Tuesday, March 17, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Josephine Bonnano Merlino and Gaitano Merlino. Barney served in the US Navy during the Korean War and was a crew chief for American Airlines for 25 years. He was active in the VFW, the American Legion, and the Elks. Barney enjoyed working on cars, woodworking and traveling. His family remembers him as being outgoing and knowing no strangers. Barney is survived by his wife of 33 years, Angela Sue Merlino of Ravenel, SC; daughter, Melanie Glaize of Charleston, SC, two brothers: Louie Merlino and Frankie Merlino; and one sister, Lucy Schieferstein. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Paul Merlino, Thomas Merlino, Tony Merlino, Dominick Merlino, and Joey Merlino; and two sisters: Connie Magistro and Rose Szeliga. A memorial service will be held 11:30 am Saturday, April 26, 2014, in the chapel of McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 2501 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414, 843-722-8371. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 am Saturday, April 26, 2014, one hour prior to the service.
