Anne Elizabeth Millar Double, 80, of Charleston, SC, passed away at home peacefully with her three daughters present, on Monday, September 26, 2016. She was born on Thursday, January 9, 1936 in Detroit, MI, daughter of the late Helen Horn and the late John Millar. Mom started her nursing career at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, and after a tenure working in intercity Detroit as a home health nurse, she spent the majority of her career with the Veterans Administration. After retiring from the Veterans Administration, where she worked as the Director of Nursing in a variety of hospitals around the country, she continued to serve as an employee of the Amedisys Home Health in Charleston. She eventually retired just after her 80th birthday. Although she devoted her life to the service of others, Mom always took time to be with her family. As a caring and compassionate mother, sister, and “Nanaâ€, she was actively involved in her family members’ lives. Her home was one of acceptance, and Mom raised her children to treat everyone with respect and kindness. She taught the importance of staying positive through life’s bleak moments and always offered a listening ear. Her family is eternally grateful for her gifts of patience, humor, compassion and wisdom. Mom recently suffered the loss of her son, Donald, and as she has done all her life, she put her own needs aside to care for her loved ones. She is survived by daughters: Karen Barnes (Michael), Beth Double, and Joyce Double; her grandchildren: Monica, Michael, William and Kristi; siblings: Katherine Ptasznik (Gary), Roy Castle (Rose), Bob Castle, Bill Millar (Carol) and Jack Millar. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation, Inc., 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
