Alfred Erwin Abel, 91, of Summerville, South Carolina passed away, Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was born on July 10, 1926 in Providence, Rhode Island to Karl and Elsa (Rogler) Abel. He loved riding motorcycles, boating, swimming in the ocean, playing the harmonica and spending time with his family. He loved traveling and spent many years touring the United States. He joined the Navy at 17 years old when Roosevelt was President and retired from the Navy after 22 years of service. While in the Navy his crew on the USS Triton was the first ever to circumnavigate the world submerged.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Abel; daughters Teri Halajcsik (Bruce) of Summerville, SC Jean Sahakian (Varton) of Elk River, MN and ; son, Kurt Abel (Belinda) of N. Attleboro, MA; Sister Elsa Field of Pawtucket, RI. He had six Grandchildren; Valerie Sahakian, Dylan Sahakian, Jessie Halajcsik, Danielle Halajcsik, Alex Abel and Alfred Abel.
He was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Elsa; brothers Karl Abel and Ernest Abel, sisters include Helen Paine and Gertrude Box.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 3, 2018 for a celebration of life service from 2:00-3:00pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek. A reception will immediately follow in the same location.
